Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had a cold, after which my lips became chapped. The lips have become reddish, painful, and swollen.
Please suggest treatment.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I went through your query and understood your concern.
I have a few questions.
1. Did you have a cold?
2. Did you take any antibiotics for a cold?
3. Did the lips swell after taking medicines?
It seems that you are suffering from acute cheilitis. I suggest you follow the instructions mentioned below,
1. Maintain adequate hydration.
2. Apply moisturizer on the lip and avoid if it triggers the dryness and symptoms.
3. Avoid any bite on the lips.
4. Avoid the usage of medication if there is any association between the swollen lips and the medicines taken.
5. Take a multivitamin tablet for 15 days.
6. Maintain oral hygiene.
Kindly follow up with the answers.
I hope this has helped you.
Thanks and regards.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for your reply.
My lips started to swell after my cold. Even after stopping the medicine for the cold, the swelling in the lips worsened. The lips also became itchy and painful. Is there any specific type of moisturizer to use on lips? Also, should I take Benadryl or Ibuprofen for the pain?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I suggest you follow the instructions mentioned below,
1. Use liquid petroleum jelly as a moisturizer to soothe the skin of the lips.
2. Take a tablet of Ibuprofen (painkiller) for pain relief.
3. Take a multivitamin tablet as it helps heal cheilitis.
4. Take a tablet of Levocetirizine 5 milligrams once daily before bedtime for five days to reduce itching.
5. Avoid any trigger and lip bite or sucking as it would erode the new layers of growth, and the vicious cycle would continue.
Kindly consult a specialist, talk with them and take the medications with their consent.
I hope this has helped you.
Thanks and regards.
