Can a hairline fracture develop even if initially diagnosed as a sprain on an X-ray?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I badly rolled my ankle. I took an X-ray, and the diagnosis was a sprain. However, since then, the discomfort has grown significantly. I can barely sleep, am more irritable, and experience sharper, more excruciating pain when I touch the wounded region. My ankle seems distorted to me. Could the doctor have missed a hairline fracture, which has gotten worse? Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

There will be some bruising, redness (slightly higher than expected for an ankle injury), and swelling. The fracture is usually worst regarding displacement at the time of injury. Unless you have reinjured the leg, there is little chance that you may have worsened a hairline crack if it was there just by walking. You have not mentioned any tablets or whether you are icing the ankle. Please take painkillers for worsening pain. The elevation is significant. Ice the area up to five times a day.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
