What is the treatment for anxiety?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 29-year-old woman struggling with my mental health issues. My chest feels heavy and tight, and my heart beats faster most of the time. I also face problems with breathing, and I cannot sleep properly anymore. I am constantly tossing and turning, and my mind is racing with worry. I cannot focus at work, and I have started avoiding social situations altogether because I am so afraid of having a panic attack in public. Could all of this be related to anxiety? What can I do to get some relief? How can I help myself get out of this? Will I be able to recover from this? What steps should I take to avoid these symptoms? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist.

Based on the description, you may have an anxiety disorder. There is non-pharmacological management for depression, I suggest you follow the below guidelines:

  • Exercise daily for 30 to 45 minutes like at least going for a walk. It can help you uplift your mood.

  • Meditate daily for 20 minutes, just sit in one place in a comfortable position, and try to concentrate on your normal breathing. Do not stop or force yourself to stop your thoughts, just let it be.

  • Consume healthy home-cooked foods, and avoid junk foods.

  • Drink enough water.

  • Spend quality time with friends and family daily or connect with them through video calls if you are living away from your family.

  • Spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills or language or musical instruments.

  • Get enough seven to eight hours of sleep daily.

  • Avoid tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse.

  • Live your life, do not just spend it.

  • Be bold and confident.

  • If you still have symptoms that persist after following the advice for four to six weeks, then you need to start medications for a short duration.

  • Get the following blood investigation done.

    • CBC (complete blood count)

    • Thyroid profile

    • RBS (random blood sugar)

    • ECG (Electrocardiogram)

    • Vitamin D3

    • Vitamin B12

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
