What causes pain in the lower arm after donating plasma?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I recently donated plasma, and a few days later, I began experiencing pain in my lower arm, just below the elbow. The pain feels like a sharp, pulling sensation that occurs when I extend my arm. It worsens when my arm has been bent for extended periods, and it is especially painful in the morning, likely because my arm remains bent overnight.
This has been going on for three days. I have only taken Ibuprofen once, before going to sleep, so I am unsure how effective it was. There is no tenderness, bruising, or swelling in the affected area. The phlebotomist who inserted the needle was not particularly gentle. Could this be a sprain? Is it possible that the way the phlebotomist inserted the needle contributed to the pain?
Please advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Based on your description, it does not sound too serious, so try not to worry. Here are my suggestions for you:
- Rest your arm and avoid repetitive movements or heavy lifting for a few days.
- Apply a warm compress (using a hot water bottle or sandbag) for 15 to 20 minutes, two to three times a day.
- Take Ibuprofen after meals, and continue for five days.
- Gently stretch your arm in the morning to improve mobility.
- Avoid sleeping with your arm bent, as this can worsen the pain.
Follow up if the pain lasts longer than a week, gets worse, or is accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arm or fingers. In that case, I recommend seeing a physician.
Wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery!
Thank you.
