Do HIV treatment side effects like nausea improve?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Are there any side effects of HIV medicines that go away over time? My nephew started his treatment a few weeks ago, and he is having a lot of trouble adjusting to it. He has been getting nausea every day, and bad headaches, and he cannot seem to sleep well at night.

Will these side effects go away after some time, or is this a sign that the medications are not right for him? Do we need to ask his doctor about switching the medicine, or should he just wait it out? We are not sure what to do.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition,n and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry. I am here to take care of you. Regarding your questions, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) medications have side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and fatigue due to the medications taken. It affects the blood cells and causes some gastrointestinal symptoms.

Yes, the side effects will go away with time. All HIV medications are working perfectly for the patient by reducing the viral load. So, let him or her continue with the medications taken, and I suggest you take the following medicines. Take two tablets of Ferrous sulfate 220 mg by mouth three times a day for one month. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent.

I hope it helps.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thank you and take care.
