Can I safely use talc-based products on my baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been hearing a lot about the court cases involving talc products and their connection to ovarian cancer. As a parent, this makes me worried. They say using talc on babies is like exposing them to asbestos. Is there any truth to this? I understand that talc is a mineral often used in baby powder to prevent diaper rash and keep skin dry.

Given the lawsuits and claims that talc products might be contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen, is it safe to use talc-based products on my baby, or should I look for alternatives? How credible are these claims, and what precautions should I take to ensure my child's safety?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

We feel glad that you reached out to us.

It has long been recommended that talc not be used. This recommendation applies to all the companies. Many companies indeed have numerous lawsuits.

Talc generally consists of very fine particles that a baby may inhale, potentially causing lung problems. Additionally, if it contains asbestos, it can irritate the baby's delicate skin and is carcinogenic. Using talc on damp skin can also lead to pore blockage. Fortunately, there are alternative products available, such as cornstarch-based powder.

I suggest thoroughly checking the product for all ingredients, although many companies may keep all information on the label private.

If you are unsure about the product, it is best to dry the baby with a soft towel simply.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
