Does cockroach allergy triggers asthma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Lately, I have been having some trouble with pests at home, mainly mosquitoes and cockroaches, and I am starting to get concerned about the potential health risks. I know they’re annoying, but I’ve read that mosquitoes can transmit diseases like malaria and dengue. I am starting to wonder if I need to take stronger pest control measures, not just to get rid of the annoyance, but for the sake of our health.

  1. Are there other mosquito-borne illnesses I should be aware of?
  2. As for cockroaches, I have heard they can trigger allergies and asthma, especially in kids. Is that true?
  3. Are there any other health risks that come from having them around?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Mosquitoes can pose a health risk depending on the species:

  1. Anopheles mosquitoes are known for spreading malaria.

  2. Aedes mosquitoes can carry dengue, chikungunya, and the Zika virus.

  3. Culex mosquitoes may transmit West Nile virus and filariasis.

To help protect yourself and your family, here are a few tips:

  1. Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes might breed, like buckets, planters, or birdbaths.

  2. Use mosquito nets, especially during sleep in high-risk areas.

  3. Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.

  4. Apply mosquito repellents with ingredients like DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil.

  5. Support or participate in local vector control programs if available in your area.

As for cockroaches, they are more than just a nuisance; they can spread bacteria and trigger health issues like:

  1. Salmonella.

  2. Typhoid fever.

  3. Cholera.

  4. Dysentery.

  5. Leprosy.

  6. Listeriosis.

  7. Plague.

And they have been linked to asthma and allergy flare-ups, especially in kids.

They may also carry E. coli, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus bacteria. If you are seeing cockroaches regularly, it is best to contact a professional pest control service. That’s the most effective way to keep your home safe, prevent cockroach allergy, and reduce health risks.

Hope this helps!
