What should people with asthma do on pollution-prone days?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 28-year-old male. I have been dealing with asthma since I was 12 years old, and lately, with pollution levels rising, it has been tough to manage. What can I do to reduce my symptoms and prevent asthma attacks? I want advice on both treatment options and preventive measures that can be taken. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

There should be an allergen that can worsen your symptoms. Identify the allergens like dust, cold weather, meals, exercise, and sometimes gastritis. Avoid the allergen and gradually get exposed to it if it is not dust. Meanwhile, you have to treat with medication. If you have allergic rhinitis associated with asthma, you must get treatment for that also.

For treatment, I would suggest you take:

  1. Short-term beta agonist Asthalin 400 mcg, one to two puffs every four to six hours for the initial three days, and eight hourly for another week.
  2. Long-term beta agonist, Foracot 400 mcg, one to two puffs twice a day.
  3. Salbutamol 2 mg for one week.
  4. Dexamethasone 0.5 mg twice a day for five days.
  5. Vitamin C 100 mg for five days.
  6. Desloratadine 5 mg twice a day for five days.

Once you improve, you can do your routine work and do a sport that may help to better lung expansion, like running, volleyball, swimming, and more.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Regards.
