Why does my asthma worsen in dusty environments at age 52?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 52-year-old male with asthma, and I have noticed that my breathing gets dramatically worse whenever I am around dusty basements, old buildings, or places with visible mold. Why does asthma at age 52 worsen in dusty or fungal spore-heavy environments?

Inhalers eventually help, but sometimes the chest tightness and wheezing begin almost immediately after exposure, which makes me anxious about certain workplaces and travel situations.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Asthma is often an allergic condition in which your airways become overly sensitive or “reactive” to certain triggers. Environmental factors such as dust, mold, and fungal spores could be playing an important role for you. This is common in cases like old buildings, damp houses, or basements. This explains why your symptoms may worsen rapidly after exposure.

I would recommend allergy testing to see what specific allergens are contributing to your condition. But based on your history, it’s already probable that dust and molds are major triggers for you. So it is also very important to avoid such environments as much as possible. Always carry your reliever inhaler with you, especially when you are traveling or in a new environment.

Another option is allergen immunotherapy (allergy desensitization), a treatment in which your body is given increasing doses of allergens over time to decrease the immune system’s overreaction. This may be helpful for some people, but usually takes time and a long-term commitment before any noticeable improvement.

I hope you find my reply helpful.

Please feel free to ask if you need any more clarification or support.

Thank you.
