How to prevent atherosclerosis in men?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
What are the risks that are related to atherosclerosis in men? How to protect ourselves from atherosclerosis? Please help me to understand what it is and how to prevent that. What type of food should be avoided and what exercise to be followed to avoid these diseases?
My husband is 40 years old and he is very unconscious and careless about eating fatty foods. I am scared he might get heart disease. His BP (blood pressure) is also very high for the past 10 years. He is not willing to come to the physician and get tested. He says he will change his diet and do proper exercise but never follows that. Please help how to prevent heart disease through diet and exercise.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Atherosclerosis is a condition where the arteries harden and narrow due to the buildup of plaque which is made up of cholesterol, and fats. This restricts blood flow and can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral artery disease. Men, over 40 with high blood pressure, poor diet, and lack of exercise, are more prone to this condition.
-
Avoid foods high in saturated fats and trans-fats.
-
Avoid processed foods, fried foods, red meats, and full-fat dairy products.
-
Focus on Fresh fruits and vegetables.
-
Reducing salt intake.
-
Regular physical activity. Exercise helps:
- Lower blood pressure.
- Improve cholesterol levels.
- Reduce weight.
-
Smoking damages the blood vessels and accelerates the development of atherosclerosis.
-
Reducing alcohol.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
