What supplements or treatments help eczema flares?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My girlfriend is 20 years old. She suffers from mild and controllable eczema. But for the past six months, she has some worsening effects due to skin irritation. It has affected her self-esteem. She has varied white patches on her skin. It is dry and itchy. Around twenty percent of the body has white patches, literally from the shoulder to the toes. Now her eyes and ears start to itch.

We got a little control after trying millions of different creams, and after using Hydrocortisone, it really flared up, and she uses a good moisturizer daily. We tried taking a gluten-free diet, and it has helped her. Are there any supplements or vitamins that keep the skin hydrated without dryness and itchiness? Are there any treatments available to get back the young, beautiful skin?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is necessary to consult a dermatologist soon and get a biopsy done. As it looks like atopic eczema, your history concurs with it, and it is good to rule out other possibilities, as the disease is widespread. Apply moisturizer multiple times a day on the affected region. There are some immunosuppressant drugs that can control flare-ups.

As topical is not working for her, your dermatologist can start giving systemic steroids or any other immunosuppressant like Cyclosporine, and you can have control of flare-ups after doing blood investigations. She can avoid having sun exposure, and she can try phototherapy. Try to control these flare-ups by following the above-mentioned measures as soon as possible.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
