Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 32-year-old woman, and I was recently diagnosed with ADHD. I have always struggled with concentration and emotional regulation, especially around my period. I have started Methylphenidate, and it helps, but I have noticed my symptoms worsen during the luteal phase of my cycle.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Yes, there is a connection between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). ADHD medications may sometimes disturb the gastrointestinal system, causing nausea, abdominal cramps, and pain. That is why you are experiencing increased discomfort and worsening of symptoms during the perimenstrual phase.
ADHD medications typically work by altering dopamine transport systems and increasing brain‐stem arousal, resulting in heightened alertness. Hormonal fluctuations during menstruation, especially changes in estrogen and progesterone, can slightly affect the absorption and effectiveness of these medications
There is no need to worry. Continue adhering to your medication schedule and managing stress and anxiety. In many cases, consistent reassurance and a structured routine may provide the best support.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
I hope this helps.
