Will drinking alcohol reduce auditory and visual hallucinations?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Why do my auditory and visual hallucinations go away when I drink more alcohol? I rarely maybe once in every two years used to drink a little alcohol. I started developing hallucinations which is very vivid every second, at the of age 22 and they persisted for four years. When I drank alcohol it went away for five or six hours and then came back.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist. I can understand your situation. You may have psychosis. Your hallucination temporarily disappears because of alcohol's CNS depressant effect. But it will worsen once the alcohol effect is finished. You must not consume alcohol. You must visit your nearest psychiatrist for a detailed evaluation and further treatment. Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
