Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 19-month-old child accidentally got eucalyptus oil in his right eye when the bottle splashed out from the hand. I kept a cold compress over the eye as he was not letting me do anything else is too agitated. He settled down soon after and fell asleep. What are the short and long term consequences? And what should I look out for?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Such an occurrence is quite common in children, and most often does not result in any eye damage. The first thing to do is to wash his eye very thoroughly with clean running water, and this should remove all oil from his eye. Usually, this measure alone is quite sufficient to prevent any further damage. Complications and consequences which can happen are irritation and inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva. I will list down a set of red flag symptoms, which if present will need a face to face consultation with the ophthalmologist which include redness, pain, watering not reducing despite washing, blurred vision, sticky discharge from the eye.
