Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 40-year-old female. I have had severe back pain for the past two weeks. I got this pain after doing hard exercise for an hour every day.
Please assist.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Strenuous exercise can indeed cause severe back pain, especially if it is intense or involves improper technique. Engaging in intense physical activity, particularly if it is beyond your usual routine or includes heavy lifting and twisting motions, can strain the back muscles, ligaments, and discs. This can lead to significant discomfort.
However, there are other potential causes of severe back pain as well. Muscle strains or ligament sprains from overuse or sudden movements, herniated discs that press on nerves, spinal stenosis from narrowing of the spinal canal, degenerative disc disease from wear and tear, osteoarthritis (a type of arthritis that happens when the cartilage that lines your joints is worn down and your bones rub against each other), poor posture, and previous injuries can all contribute to back pain.
I suggest some of the methods that help in relieving pain are:
Exercise: They can help relieve back pain.
Strengthening core muscles: They improve flexibility through stretching and engaging in low-impact activities like swimming or walking that support overall fitness without putting additional strain on the back.
Medications: Medications also play a role in managing pain, with over-the-counter options like Ibuprofen (nonsteroidal pain killers) or Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) reducing pain and inflammation, muscle relaxants alleviating spasms, and topical treatments providing localized relief.
Consult your doctor and take medications accordingly.
If severe back pain persists, I suggest consulting a healthcare professional, which is essential to identify the cause and receive a tailored treatment plan that may include physical therapy or other interventions.
I hope this helps.
Thank you, and take care.
Regards.
