Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was prescribed topical Metronidazole for my bacterial vaginosis diagnosis, but I vape. Will this affect me negatively because of the propylene glycol in the vape juice?
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Vaping while using topical Metronidazole for bacterial vaginosis is unlikely to cause a direct or dangerous interaction.
The Metronidazole you were prescribed acts locally in the vaginal area, and only a small amount is absorbed into the bloodstream. Therefore, it does not interact significantly with substances in vape juice, such as propylene glycol or nicotine. However, it is essential to recognize that vaping itself, particularly due to the chemicals in vape liquids, including propylene glycol, glycerin, nicotine, and flavoring agents, can irritate mucous membranes and potentially disrupt the body’s natural bacterial balance.
This may indirectly exacerbate bacterial vaginosis symptoms or increase the risk of recurrence. While occasional vaping is not expected to interfere with Metronidazole treatment, reducing or pausing vaping during therapy may help the body heal more effectively and maintain a healthy vaginal microbiome.
It is also best to avoid alcohol completely during treatment and for at least 24 hours after completing Metronidazole, as alcohol consumption may cause a severe reaction.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
