How to reduce the dietary salt intake?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 50-year-old male currently dealing with depression, and I have been struggling with high blood pressure as well. I have been told that my excessive salt intake might be contributing to my hypertension, but I find it challenging to reduce my salt consumption due to my depressive state.

  1. Could you please explain the relationship between sodium intake and hypertension?

  2. How much of an impact can reducing salt have on managing high blood pressure?

  3. Additionally, are there any specific dietary recommendations or strategies that could help me reduce my salt intake while accommodating my current mental health condition?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Dietary sodium intake has been linked to blood pressure, and a reduction in dietary salt intake has been documented to lower blood pressure. In young subjects, salt intake has a programming effect in that blood pressure remains elevated even after a high salt intake has been reduced.

However, the data linking a decreased salt intake to a decrease in morbidity and mortality in hypertensive patients is not unanimous. Dietary salt intake reduction can delay or prevent the incidence of antihypertensive therapy, facilitate blood pressure reduction in hypertensive patients receiving medical therapy, and may represent a simple cost-saving mediator to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Please mention your BP (blood pressure) charting.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
