How to manage a Bartholin's cyst?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My girlfriend has a problem during sex. After she reaches climax, a bump appears on the side of her vaginal opening. We suspect it might be a yeast infection, but we are not certain. Can you provide some guidance?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

It sounds like your girlfriend is experiencing something unusual during sex, particularly a bump near her vaginal opening. While yeast infections usually cause symptoms like itching and discharge, they do not typically create lumps or swelling. The swelling could be from irritation, an inflamed gland like the Bartholin gland, or an infection.

Some possible causes include a Bartholin gland cyst, which can swell during or after intercourse, irritation from condoms or lubricants, or vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted disease. Since the symptoms could have various causes, it is best to see a gynecologist for an examination. They can evaluate the lump and check for any infections. In the meantime, keeping good genital hygiene and using gentle, unscented products may help reduce irritation.

I hope you got an answer.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Thank you.
