Is the HCG beta blood quantity test conclusive 14 days after conception?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My girlfriend and I engaged in unprotected sex, and she has irregular bleeding, making it difficult to track her menstrual cycle or predict when her period might occur. I would like to know whether the hCG beta blood quantity test is conclusive for providing accurate results 14 days after unprotected sex. If the test yields a negative result and her hCG levels are below the pregnancy range, should I consider repeating the test on day 25 or 26 following unprotected sex? My understanding is that this blood test is more sensitive than a urine test and can be administered 10 to 14 days after conception.

This concern arises because we cannot rely on her missed period as an indicator, given her history of irregular bleeding and uncertainty about her cycle. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The blood serum beta hCG test is considered one of the most conclusive pregnancy tests, and it can provide reliable results as early as 8 days after the last intercourse. Even if you prefer to wait until 14 days post-intercourse, the results would still be considered conclusive. In this test, if the hCG levels measure above 5 mIU/dL, it confirms pregnancy; otherwise, it indicates that she is not pregnant.

Thank you for seeking this consultation, and if you have any more questions or concerns, feel free to ask.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your response.

Just to confirm and clarify further, today marks 24 days since the unprotected intercourse, and we are planning to undergo the hCG beta blood quantitative test. If the result shows less than 5 mIU/dL, indicating a negative result, would it be safe to consider this result conclusive, or is it necessary to repeat the test again after an additional 2 days?

Kindly clarify.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, if the hCG level measures less than 5 mIU/dL, it indicates that she is not pregnant, and there is no apparent need to repeat the test, as a single test at this stage would be considered conclusive.

Thank you.
