A 28-days-old baby is not crying. Is it normal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby boy is not crying. He is 28 days old. Although he cried little after birth. He used to sleep all times about five days ago. We were unable to feed him. Four days ago a tube was passed from nose to feed him. Now he opens eyes and has started moving his arms. But still he is not crying or making some noice.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The condition which you have described is called birth asphyxia, where in a newly born baby does not cry at birth and requires some kind of assistance to breathe. Such babies may have damage to the brain, heart, kidneys, etc. The extent to which it effects the body organs, depends on the severity of the disease.

If your baby is still on tube feeds at one month, the damage to the brain is extensive. Your baby would require MRI brain (no radiation effect) to know the severity of injury. There is possibility he might not attain some functions and might not do his daily activities by himself. He might require gastrostomy for establishing feeds, so that you can feed him at home by yourself. He would later on require neurorehabilitation.
