Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am on birth control and have been taking them for three months, however, the first month I took them I was fine, and my period was coming normally. But during the second month, I bled for two weeks straight. I am now in my third month, and I have been bleeding for three weeks. I was just wondering if this is due to birth control and if so, should I stop taking the birth control?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

You are still in the teenage group, in the phase of development so you can have ovulatory-anovulatory regular and irregular cycles. Hormonal contraceptive pills have side effects as well and they can vary from person to person. It seems your body is not responding very well to it and having an effect on the regularity and length of your cycle as well.

1. Have a complete checkup of any health issue that you may be having with the respective medical specialists.

2. Have iron supplements as well to reduce the chances of anemia.

3. Have a complete blood count, thyroid function test, and transvaginal scan to be on the safe side and discuss here or with a local gynecology doctor.

4. You can go for other contraceptives like mini pills, intrauterine devices, or implants.

5. If you still continue to bleed, you can have the Tablet Ponstan 500 mg (Mefenamic acid) 8 hourly and the tablet Tranexamic acid 500 mg 8 hourly for 3 to 5 days as per your heavy periods' symptoms. You can stop when you get relief. However, please consult a physician, discuss with them, and start taking the medications with their consent.

Have a healthy diet, walk daily, and have recreational activities.

Hope this helps.

Thanks and take care.
