What is he side effect of taking extra blood pressure pills?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I mistakenly took a blood pressure medication last night after having already taken one in the morning. Should I take my blood pressure medication again this morning? The medication is Amlodipine besylate 10mg.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Since you accidentally took an extra dose of tablet Amlodipine (a calcium channel blocker for blood pressure regulation) 10 mg last night, I recommend skipping your morning dose today to avoid the risk of low blood pressure (hypotension). Amlodipine has a long half-life, meaning it stays in the system for an extended period, and taking another dose now could further lower your blood pressure.
Please monitor for symptoms such as:
-
Dizziness or lightheadedness.
-
Unusual tiredness.
-
Fainting.
-
Slow heart rate.
If any of these occur, sit or lie down and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
You can resume your regular dose tomorrow morning, provided you feel well. If you have a home blood pressure monitor, it is advisable to keep track of your readings throughout the day. Monitor blood pressure at home two to three times during the day if a monitor is available. Watch for symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, chest pain, or excessive fatigue. Stay hydrated, but avoid excessive fluid intake if you have any heart or kidney conditions. Avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day to reduce the risk of falls if blood pressure drops. If you feel unwell or your systolic blood pressure drops below 90 mmHg, seek medical attention.
I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
