Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 26 years old and have been living with type 1 diabetes since my teenage years. Recently, my blood sugar levels have become unpredictable, swinging between dangerously low and excessively high. My last HbA1c test came back at 9 percent, which is concerning, and my cholesterol levels have also been steadily rising. These fluctuations in my blood sugar are starting to take a toll on my confidence, making me wonder if an underlying issue, like thyroid dysfunction, might be contributing to the changes. I have heard that thyroid conditions often coexist with diabetes, but I am unsure what signs to watch for or what tests to ask my doctor about. The stress of managing these symptoms is becoming overwhelming, and I am worried about the long-term impact on my health.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Unpredictable blood sugars and rising HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) will require the following listed below:
Thyroid function tests such as TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), free T4 (thyroxine), and T3 (triiodothyronine).
Need to adjust insulin dose and consider using a CGM (continuous glucose monitoring) for better tracking.
Dietary changes, like reducing refined carbs and increasing fiber, can stabilize glucose and help manage cholesterol.
Statins may be needed for high cholesterol; discuss options with your doctor.
Stress management, like mindfulness or therapy, can improve control.
Thyroid screening, insulin adjustment, lifestyle changes, and emotional support can address your concerns.
I hope this has helped you.
Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.
Thank you.
