What causes metallic‑smelling stool with red mucus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 25 years old, male,297 pounds, and 5 feet 7 inches tall. My stool is light brown and soft, but it has a metallic smell similar to blood, although no blood is visibly present. However, when I checked by inserting my finger, I saw a bright red, slimy consistency.

It has been several days, and my stool still has a metallic smell but remains light brown to brown. The red slimy consistency comes and goes. I do not take any supplements. Am I sick?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

It is understandable to feel concerned when you notice changes in your stool or an unusual smell. A metallic smell can sometimes be related to small amounts of blood, even if it is not clearly visible.

The bright red, slimy consistency you described could represent mucus mixed with a small amount of fresh blood from irritation or inflammation in the lower bowel, such as from hemorrhoids, an anal fissure, or mild colitis.

Since this has been happening for several days, it would be wise to have it checked by a doctor. They may suggest the following:

  1. Stool test.

  2. Rectal examination.

  3. Colonoscopy, depending on your symptoms and medical history.

It is also important to watch for warning signs such as:

  1. Black or tarry stools.

  2. Persistent pain.

  3. Diarrhea.

  4. Fever.

  5. Unexplained weight loss.

Maintaining good hydration, eating a fiber-balanced diet, and avoiding straining during bowel movements can help reduce irritation. While this may not necessarily mean something serious, it is best not to ignore changes in your stool pattern, especially since it has been ongoing.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
