Can an ultrasound procedure performed by a plastic surgeon assist in the removal of breast implants?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 45-year-old female, and I am generally in excellent health with no symptoms. Twenty years ago, I underwent breast augmentation surgery using a method that was considered safe at the time. Instead of using a silicone or saline-filled bag, they injected a substance called polyacrylamide hydrogel.

However, I have now become aware of the potential dangers associated with this substance and wish to have it removed. Where should I start, and what type of doctor should I seek for this matter?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Breast augmentation and related procedures fall under the purview of the plastic surgery department, which specializes in breast implantation. In the past, injections and gel were used, but nowadays silicone breast implants are the preferred option. It is unlikely that you would experience any side effects, as they would typically manifest as breast pain or other symptoms. To begin, I would recommend undergoing an ultrasound examination of the breasts. This will help determine the status of your previous implants and identify any potential issues. Based on the ultrasound results, we can proceed with the next steps.

If everything appears normal, there may be no need for removal. However, if there are concerns, the implants can be removed. Please undergo the ultrasound examination and share the reports with me. I will review them and provide further guidance. If you prefer an in-person consultation, I suggest scheduling an appointment with a plastic surgeon. Are you experiencing any symptoms such as chest pain, nipple discharge, or changes in size? Please let me know so that I can assist you accordingly.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.
