My mother had breast cancer. What is my risk?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I am worried about my own risk of getting it. Is it hereditary?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

If there is a family history of breast cancer, then there is some chance of getting breast cancer, but it is not like if your mother has breast cancer, you will also have it 100 percent; however, as there is some risk indeed, you should be more careful.

You should regularly do self-breast examinations, look for any lump, discoloration, or discharge from the nipple, and compare both breasts. If you feel there is any abnormality, you should consult with a surgeon or a gynecologist. Also, every three years you should do a mammography.

I hope this information helps you. Feel free to ask further queries.
