What steps should be taken if a lump is found in the breast?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I think I found a lump in my breast but I am not sure whether it is normal. It is long and goes from the middle top outer section down to the nipple then stops. It is very hard. Both my breasts have also been itchy and are covered in small bumps. My nipples on the same side also seem to have become redder and the surrounding tan area is bumpy. I do not think this is normal for me.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

At your age, breast cancer is extremely rare, so there may be no reason for concern. It could be a fibroadenoma, a non-cancerous lesion, which typically requires follow-up every six months. I recommend getting an ultrasound of both breasts, including the axilla, and then visiting a mammologist, general surgeon, or gynecologist. They will examine your breasts and review the results to determine whether to continue monitoring or conduct further investigations.

If you have a family history of breast cancer or other types of cancer, they may suggest additional tests, such as genetic screening. Based on the examination, follow-up care might be sufficient, but it is important to have a professional evaluation to make a definitive decision.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
