Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have just a 16-day-old newborn baby who is under breastfeeding. Because of that reason, I want to know the best replacement for breast milk and how I can replace it step by step?

Answered by Dr. Babu Lal Meena

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

There is no replacement for breast milk because it contains nutrients sufficient for the baby's growth in the initial six months. Contraindication to this is maternal HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), chemotherapy, and so on.

If you have a problem in establishing a feed, we can discuss it and can solve your problem. If the mother is not able to feed despite rehabilitation measures, we can use infant feeding formulas. Personally, I would recommend Nan-1; use it after dilution in clean and fresh water. Mix one spoon of powder with 30 ml of water and feed him every two to three hours as per the requirement. Monitor your baby's weight to check his growth and adequacy of feed. Breast milk is best for the baby, and formula-fed babies have more chances of infection, mainly due to poor hygiene and faulty preparation.

If you need further help, you can post a query or call.
