Patient's Query
Hi, Doctor,
I have had brittle nails, frizzy hair, and dry skin for as long as I can remember. I have tried many products without achieving any results. What can be done for this?
Thanks.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Thank you for sharing all your concerns. I can totally relate to the frustration of having dry skin, brittle nails, and frizzy hair for years, even after trying out multiple products.
Please know that this is a very common situation. In many cases, the issue is not just external care but an underlying skin-barrier weakness or nutritional deficiency, both of which can be improved with the right approach.
From what you describe, your symptoms point toward chronic xerosis (dry skin), weak nail matrix, and hair shaft damage, possibly aggravated by low body weight and potential micronutrient deficiencies. The thickened, elevated toenail may also suggest a fungal nail infection, which would need separate evaluation and treatment.
The fact that moisturizers give little relief usually means the skin barrier is compromised, so we need to repair it gently and consistently rather than overload it with products.
For daily skincare, I would strongly recommend switching to a very gentle cleanser for dry, normal, and sensitive skin or 2 % Niacinamide skin cleanser, only twice daily with lukewarm water.
After cleansing, use serum once daily, which helps restore the skin barrier, reduce transepidermal water loss, and improve dryness over time without irritation, like a deeply hydrating serum, and then seal it with a Vitamin E–based moisturizer or a few drops of marula oil, especially at night.
This layering helps lock moisture into the skin rather than letting it evaporate. For your hair, frizz despite serums usually means internal dryness and hair bond damage, not lack of styling products.
Use a sulphate-free shampoo, and after washing, apply hair serum only on mid-lengths and ends. Avoid heat styling as much as possible and do not apply serums to the scalp.
Regarding your nails, brittle fingernails often improve only when internal deficiencies are corrected. I strongly advise getting basic blood tests, especially serum iron studies, vitamin B12, and vitamin D levels, as deficiencies here commonly cause brittle nails, dry skin, and frizzy hair, even when skincare is correct.
The thickened toenail should be examined for onychomycosis (fungal infection), as topical nail cosmetics will not help if fungus is present.
General measures are equally important:
Increase water intake, include good dietary fats (nuts, seeds, ghee, olive oil), avoid very hot showers, and moisturize the body immediately after bathing.
Improvement will be gradual, not instant, but with consistency, you should notice better skin comfort and stronger nails within six to eight weeks.
