For how long does the pain last after a second-degree burn?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently suffered a second-degree burn on 80 % of my left inner thigh. I received medical care in the emergency room but I had to travel and I would like to make sure that my wound is healing as it should and I do not have an infection.

Generally, the burn area looks red and I am in a significant amount of pain, especially when I stand up to move. I use an ointment Neosporin and I bandaged the area for a few days but I left it exposed for the last 24 hours, as pads stick to the wound and cause more pain when I remove them. Could you please advise if it is normal to be in a lot of pain a week after I got burnt?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the query.

I have gone through the two photos (the attachments removed to protect the patient's identity).

The wound appears healthy in both photos. There appears to be no sign of infection. Please continue using ointment and dressing. Pain is likely to be present. You can take an anti-inflammatory analgesic available after food to reduce pain. Stretching or movement may cause pain. But that should not prevent you to do some stretching. Continue treatment and follow up with your doctor as suggested. It may heal in a few days. Signs of infection are pus or green discharge or fever.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
