Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am experiencing pain in my thumb that extends from the first to the second finger. It feels like a burning sensation, and occasionally, it moves on its own. Today, when I tried to move the thumb, it felt very stiff, as if it could not bend properly.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I do understand your concern.
I understand that you are experiencing pain and stiffness in your thumb. This could potentially be indicative of a condition called trigger thumb, or stenosing tenosynovitis. Trigger thumb occurs when the tendon responsible for thumb movement becomes inflamed or thickened, leading to difficulties in bending or straightening the thumb.
This condition may cause pain, stiffness, and, in some cases, a popping or clicking sensation as the tendon moves over the fibrous sheath. If the symptoms are significant and impact your daily activities, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation and discussion of potential treatment options.
Depending on the severity, conservative measures such as rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), anti-inflammatory medications, or physical therapy exercises might be recommended to improve flexibility and strength in the affected joint. In more severe cases, surgery may be considered to release the fibrous sheath and enhance tendon movement.
I hope this information provides some clarity regarding your thumb concerns. Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns.
Thank you.
