What can I do to soothe my 5-month-old daughter’s hand burn?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My daughter grabbed some hot food and burnt her hand. She is 5 months old. Is there anything I can do to help soothe her? It is late at night, and her pediatrician is not open. Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
Thank you for reaching out. I am sorry this happened. Burns are especially distressing in young infants. For a 5-month-old with a recent hand burn, the first and most important step, if not already done, is to cool the affected area under cool running water for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not use ice. Gently remove any tight items, such as rings or mittens, if present.
After cooling, do not apply toothpaste, butter, oils, or any home remedies. You may loosely cover the area with a clean, non-stick cloth or gauze to protect it. If the baby appears uncomfortable, Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) may be given in an age- and weight-appropriate dose.
Because this is a young infant and the burn involves the hand, she should be examined by a doctor as soon as possible, even if the burn appears mild, to assess the depth and prevent complications. Please seek urgent medical care or go to the emergency department immediately if you notice blistering, white or charred skin, increasing redness or swelling, severe pain, reduced movement of the fingers, or if the burn covers more than a small area.
Until she is evaluated, keep her hand clean, uncovered or lightly covered, and do not pop any blisters. You may also apply Quench (Silver sulfadiazine) cream mixed with Xylocaine gel four times a day.
Kindly revert if there are any queries.
Thank you.
