What are the treatment options for cervical cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife has been diagnosed with cervical cancer. I am sharing her reports.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed the reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). Unfortunately, your wife has stage 1 cervical cancer. Though it is in the initial stage, it requires regular follow-up and further investigation.

The treatment choice also depends on whether the patient can be followed up at regular intervals to find any other seedlings. The various treatment options include:

  • Abdominal hysterectomy.
  • LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure).
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Kindly consult your surgical oncologist further in this regard.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the response.

I have a few questions. Is it curable? Does she need to get admitted to a hospital? Can she do regular jobs? Will she have hair fall? Can she have a baby? For how long does she need a follow-up? How long can she survive?

Kindly guide.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I will answer your queries one by one:

  • At this stage, cervical cancer is entirely curable.
  • Admission to the hospital depends upon the type of treatment chosen. She requires hospital admission for a hysterectomy.
  • As far as regular jobs are concerned, she can do normal jobs after the treatment.
  • Hair fall occurs in chemotherapy (medical treatment of cancer). However, the role of chemotherapy has not been successful in cervical cancer.
  • She can have a baby through surrogacy.
  • The survival rates are equal to those of other people, provided follow-up is done regularly.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

She will follow a proper follow-up. Will she not have hair loss if she does not have chemotherapy treatment?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The chances of survival in your case are very high. Also, a total abdominal hysterectomy is advisable; however, the final decision has to be made by your treating doctor. Also, hair fall occurs only in chemotherapy.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
