Hello doctor,
I was told I have cervical dystonia, and my neck muscles twist uncontrollably; sometimes my head pulls to one side. It is painful and, honestly, embarrassing when it happens in public. I have been receiving botulinum toxin injections (Botox) every few months, and although they help, the effects wear off too soon. Are there better options available now? Medications do not help much except for causing drowsiness. I read about deep-brain stimulation. Is it only used for severe cases? I just want to stop feeling like my body is fighting itself all the time.

There are also supportive therapies that can make daily life easier. Physical therapy focusing on stretching, strengthening, and posture can lower spasm frequency. Some patients get temporary relief from sensory tricks, such as touching the side of the face or the back of the head, because it can briefly interrupt the abnormal movement. Stress and fatigue often worsen dystonia, so treatments that improve sleep and anxiety can also reduce symptoms.
Even though this condition can feel overwhelming, there are newer options beyond injections alone.
