Can lack of sleep cause chest pain and dizziness?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been experiencing left chest pain, one side of my nose is blocked, and I am feeling dizziness, but all my tests like ECG, echo, blood, and X-rays came back normally.
I felt something moving in my left and middle chest and sometimes a pinching pain in my left chest. I felt dizziness and heart palpitations, too. Is it heart-related? I am worried about these symptoms. I am working the night shift. Is this because of not enough sleep time? It is been four months, and I have not been feeling good. This also affects my daily activity because it stresses me out. Can you please help me so that I do not stress about it?
Please suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Thank you so much for opening up. I can hear how deeply this is affecting your daily life and peace of mind. Let us go through everything together and help ease some of that fear. Your main symptoms are:
-
Left chest pain or pinching sensation.
-
One-sided nose block.
-
Heart palpitations.
-
Dizziness.
-
Sensation of movement in chest.
-
Stress and anxiety.
-
Working night shifts.
-
No heart disease in tests: ECG (electrocardiogram), echo, blood tests, and X-rays are normal.
-
Previous blood infection (recent antibiotics).
Let me tell you the good news first: All your major heart tests came back normal — that is very reassuring. If your ECG, echocardiogram, chest X-ray, and bloodwork all looked good, it is highly unlikely this is a serious heart problem.
What might be causing your symptoms?
1. Anxiety or panic symptoms (very common but often overlooked). These are:
-
Chest tightness or pinching.
-
Palpitations.
-
Dizziness or lightheadedness.
-
The feeling that something is "moving" inside.
-
Triggered by poor sleep, stress, or health worries.
2. Sleep disturbances due to night shifts: Working nights disrupts your circadian rhythm, which can cause:
-
Heart palpitations.
-
Dizziness.
-
Brain fog.
-
Digestive issues.
-
Worsened anxiety.
-
Even chest discomfort due to tension or poor posture during work or rest.
3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or gas trapped in the chest can mimic heart issues. It can cause chest pain or pressure and make you feel like "something moving" in the chest. It can worsen with anxiety or eating irregularly.
4. Blocked nose and dizziness could be sinus-related, possibly chronic sinusitis or allergy. One-sided nasal block with dizziness may point to an ear or sinus pressure imbalance.
I suggest you do the following to feel better:
Sleep reset: Try to get at least six to seven hours of uninterrupted sleep, even during the day. Use blackout curtains and eye masks, and limit phone use before bed. Avoid caffeine six hours before sleep. Consider a melatonin supplement (short-term use) to help with rhythm reset.
Manage anxiety and palpitations: Follow deep breathing exercises wherein you inhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds, and exhale for six seconds five times a day. Try a magnesium-rich diet or supplements (check with doctor). Avoid excess sugar or caffeine, which can worsen palpitations. Track when palpitations or dizziness happen, whether it is linked to stress, food, or sleep.
Nasal and chest relief: Use a saline nasal spray for a blocked nose. Try steam inhalation to clear sinuses. Consider seeing an ENT (ear-nose-throat) specialist if the nasal block or dizziness continues.
Remember, you are not alone. If this has been going on for four months, and you are not imagining it. But since all major medical tests are normal, this is likely a functional issue (not structural) — treatable with lifestyle, rest, and sometimes anxiety management. You are safe right now, even though it does not always feel that way. Stress can convince the body that something is wrong even when it is not.
