Is chest discomfort a symptom of an enlarged right ventricle?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been having an uncomfortable and painful sensation in the chest for the past two days. When I touch the part, I have discomfort. Otherwise, my body is completely fine. This problem exists only on the left side of the chest.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You told me you had only chest pain for two days.

  1. May I know whether you have any difficulty breathing, especially while walking or climbing stairs?
  2. And are you a diabetic or hypertensive patient?

From the ECG (electrocardiogram) you have sent (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), I can see some changes suggestive of an enlarged right ventricle of the heart. However, there may be some other causes also.

I suggest you consult a cardiologist and do an echocardiogram and a full cardiac assessment. I would also recommend taking a complete blood count and hemoglobin test to rule out anemia.

Kindly follow up with the required information.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

My hemoglobin level is low. Is it causing these symptoms?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Severe anemia will cause right ventricular enlargement and eventually lead to right ventricular failure (heart failure).

The following conditions also lead to right ventricle enlargement,

  1. COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
  2. Pulmonary emboli.
  3. Chronic lung diseases, such as sarcoidosis and pulmonary fibrosis.
  4. Pulmonary valve stenosis.
  5. Tetralogy of Fallot.
  6. Cardiac fibrosis.
  7. Sickle cell anemia.
  8. Chronic anemia includes iron deficiency, folate or B12 deficiency, or thalassemia.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
