How did I get HSV-2 infection while on Chlamydia treatment?

Hello doctor,

I did a test in the laboratory, and the result shows that I am HSV-2 positive. I was on treatment for Chlamydia when I started noticing a rash and bumps in the genital area. While peeing, there is no pain, but after peeing, I feel a burning sensation inside the penis.

I am worried about how this happened during my treatment.

How can I be on treatment for Chlamydia and then test positive for herpes within the same period?
I had sex with my partner after one week of Chlamydia treatment, before I noticed the small blisters. Could this be a problem?
The burning is only inside after urination, not outside. Is this related to herpes?
Do I have the risk of contracting HIV during the period of blisters when I had sex?
Can Chlamydia be mistaken for herpes in laboratory tests when swab samples are taken from bumps or blisters?

HSV-2 (herpes simplex virus type 2) and Chlamydia are two different infections. Treatment for Chlamydia will not cure herpes. Blisters or rashes in the genital area are more likely to be caused by herpes. Chlamydia usually causes burning during urination and discharge, but not fluid-filled blisters.

Unprotected sex during an active herpes outbreak can increase the risk of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) transmission if the partner is HIV-positive. This happens because open sores make it easier for the virus to enter. This does not mean you already have HIV. The only way to confirm is by testing.

Chlamydia cannot be mistaken for herpes in the laboratory. The tests are different. A urine sample or urethral swab can diagnose chlamydia. Herpes is confirmed by a swab from blisters or by a blood test.

You should start antiviral treatment such as Acyclovir, Valacyclovir, or Famciclovir after consulting your doctor. Avoid sexual contact until blisters heal. Get a full sexually transmitted disease (STD) panel, including HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and hepatitis. Inform your partner so they can also be tested and treated if needed.
