Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I started having symptoms of chlamydia a few days back. I got a swollen gland in my groin and my urine was foul-smelling. I also had pain in my groin and back. The pain has subsided now. I am taking Doxycycline 100 milligrams twice daily. Should I get tested? For how long and how much should I take the medicine? Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com. I went through your query and understood your concern. As you have mentioned, there may be a possibility of chlamydia or syphilis infections. However, in order to confirm the same and to undergo appropriate management options, I suggest you do the following tests. 1. Urine culture and sensitivity test, urine routine test. 2. Vaginal swab test for culture and sensitivity. 3. VDRL (venereal disease research laboratory) or RPR (rapid plasma reagin) test for syphilis. These tests will be helpful to come to a confirmatory diagnosis. Due to the fact that antibiotics were taken, they may interfere with the actual results. However, finding out the presence of the above is important and the results will help provide the right information. The tablet Doxycycline (tetracycline), although can be used for the treatment of both, there are medications that are better suited for reducing the symptoms and getting rid of the infection faster. Self-medication may be harmful and is advised to be avoided without undergoing an investigation to rule out other possible causes. Apart from the same, it is important to undergo tests for your partner in case of known exposure to prevent reinfection. An in-person consultation with a doctor is advised for examination and taking blood and swab samples for testing. It would be the ideal way to go since infection if left untreated may cause other complications. Kindly make sure to undergo tests and consult a specialist. I hope this has helped you. Thanks and regards.
