Can I have sex after kidney transplant failure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a patient of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and had my kidneys transplanted, but unfortunately, the transplantation was unsuccessful after 40 days of the procedure.

  • Please inform me if I can now engage in sexual intercourse.

  • Is it safe for me to use Megalis 10 mg?

Thank you very much.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Sorry for the late reply.

If you have been graft-failure-free for about 40 days, are clinically stable, your surgical wound has healed well, you have no pain or fever, and no signs of active infection, and your nephrologist or transplant surgeon has not advised against it, usually you can start to gradually resume sexual activity in most cases. Go carefully, and if you feel pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, or substantial discomfort, stop.

Megalis (tadalafil) 10 mg may be appropriate for certain individuals with chronic renal disease, however this will depend on various factors including your current kidney function, if you are on dialysis, your blood pressure and the medications you are presently taking.

Tadalafil should not be used if you are taking nitrate medications (such as Nitroglycerin or Isosorbide) or if you have significantly low blood pressure, as it can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Dialysis patients can still take tadalafil, but many nephrologists start with the lowest effective dose and watch for adverse symptoms including dizziness or low blood pressure.

To help me give you a more personalized advice, would you please tell me:

  • What is your age?

  • Whether you are currently on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.

  • Your most recent creatinine or eGFR (if you are not on dialysis).

  • Your current medicines, especially any that lower your blood pressure or immune system.

After you providing this information I can tell you whether Megalis 10 mg is good for you or whether a lesser quantity would be safer.

If you would want to have a more in-depth chat tailored to your medical history, you can book an appointment.

I will be pleased to check over your issue and provide you with some particular advice.

I hope this is helpful for you.

Thanks.
