Can Clindamycin cause chest tingling or a cold feeling?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took Clindamycin about two hours ago and then lay down. Since then, I have been feeling a tingling and cold, dragging sensation in my right chest, under the breast area, extending to my right arm and back. It is not exactly painful, but it feels unusual and uncomfortable. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand how uncomfortable and worrying this must feel, especially after taking a new antibiotic like Clindamycin.

Clindamycin is usually safe, but sometimes it can cause mild side effects such as stomach upset, allergic reactions, or, in rare cases, nerve-related sensations like tingling, burning, or a cold feeling.

The cold, dragging sensation you feel in your right chest, under the breast, and radiating to your arm and back is not typical of a serious allergic reaction. Severe allergies usually cause symptoms like rash, swelling, or trouble breathing.

Since you mentioned lying down soon after taking the medicine, this feeling could also be due to irritation of the esophagus (the food pipe that connects your mouth to your stomach), muscle strain, or nerve irritation in the chest or back area.

Rarely, such discomfort can be related to heart issues, but this is less likely if you are young and have no previous cardiac history.

For now, please do the following:

  • Sit upright and avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication.

  • Drink water to help the medicine move down smoothly.

  • Monitor your symptoms closely.

If you notice chest pain, tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, or swelling, please seek immediate medical attention.

Otherwise, if the tingling or dragging sensation continues even after these steps, it would be good to consult your doctor for further evaluation.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
