What are the benefits and risks of drinking coffee daily?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a huge coffee lover, and I try to drink decaf (decaffeinated coffee) sometimes, but I need my dose of caffeine in the mornings or the whole day feels off. I have been reading mixed things about coffee, and now I am wondering if I am doing something bad by sticking to my morning cup.

I have heard all sorts of stuff, from coffee being good for you to it being something to avoid, and it is getting confusing. I do not want to give it up, but I also do not want to harm my health.

  1. What is the real deal with coffee?

  2. Is it okay to keep enjoying it, or should I be cutting back?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Moderate coffee consumption is safe for most people.

Benefits of coffee:

  1. Coffee can help improve focus and alertness.

  2. Coffee is rich in antioxidants, which can help protect your cells from damage and reduce inflammation.

  3. Regular coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of certain diseases, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and type 2 diabetes.

  4. Coffee has a protective effect on the liver.

Some people are more sensitive to caffeine, which can lead to jitteriness, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Excessive coffee consumption might interfere with calcium absorption, which could impact bone health. Keep caffeine intake to about three to four cups.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
