Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 71-year-old dad has been feeling really sick lately. His cough is just not going away. We thought it was just a bad cold but he is struggling with breathing and feels very weak. I read something online about HMPV. could it be that? He had a fever on and off for the past few weeks. We are not sure if he needs a test or some kind of scan for diagnosis. Is there a specific treatment for HMPV or does it go away on its own? We live in a small town and getting to a big hospital is not always easy. He also has diabetes, so I am wondering if that complicates things. Please help us to figure out the next steps so his condition does not get worse.
Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to iCliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Based on the symptoms you described, it is definitely a good idea to consider all possibilities, including Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). I suggest you undergo a few tests like CBC (complete blood count) with ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), PCR (polymerase chain reaction), chest X-ray, chest CT scan, serum electrolyte, and HbA1C.
Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV. Treatment mainly focuses on relieving symptoms and providing supportive care. He should rest well and stay hydrated. Take Paracetamol or Ibuprofen (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) for fever (not more than 7-10 days). Cough medications (not more than 7-10 days) or humidified air may help ease symptoms. High blood sugar levels can weaken the immune system and slow recovery. It is essential to keep his blood sugar under control during illness. If his symptoms worsen (such as rapid breathing, confusion, or high fever), seek immediate medical attention.
Kindly consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him/her, and take the medicines with their consent.
I hope this helps.
Let me know if you have any other concerns.
Thank you.
