How to manage cold among children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a mom of a three-year-old son. I am very much worried about my son getting cold often. This issue started happening more frequently after my son started going to school. I am curious about why he has had a runny nose, cough, and fever so frequently and whether it is related to a respiratory syncytial virus infection. I am also wondering if it is advisable to give antibiotics or other medications frequently. Most importantly, how do I prevent this for my son? I would be very grateful if you could guide me.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It is a very common problem with small kids who recently started going to school. Your kid is developing immunity from the infections, and slowly, once immunity is fully developed, these instances will reduce.

These are mostly viral infections for which antibiotics are not required. Only in case of high grade fever or severe infection, pediatrician consultation is advised. Give more fluids and rest in such instances. Feel free to do the follow-up.

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
