What is the treatment for cold and respiratory infections?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 70-year-old man, and it seems like every time I get a cold or any respiratory infection, my doctor prescribes me a course of antibiotics. I have been doing this for years, but I am starting to worry that it might not be the right approach. I have been hearing a lot in the news lately about antimicrobial resistance and the dangers of overusing antibiotics. As someone who takes them frequently, I am concerned that I might be contributing to the problem of drug-resistant bacteria. Can you help me understand this issue better? Is it true that taking antibiotics for minor viral infections like colds is not a good idea? What are the risks of doing this in terms of building up resistance to the medications? Are there any alternative treatments I should consider instead of automatically going for the antibiotics when I am sick?

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Usually, we do not prescribe antibiotics for viral infections, including colds and flu. At your age, it is common to get bacterial infections when passing viral infections. This is because of the weakened immune system at your age. This explains why your doctor is prescribing antibiotics quite often. Indeed, antimicrobial resistance is a significant global health concern, and understanding how antibiotic use contributes to this problem is crucial.

  1. Misuse of antibiotics: Antibiotics are effective against bacterial infections, but they have no effect on viral infections like the common cold or flu. Taking antibiotics unnecessarily for viral infections does not treat the illness and contributes to the development of antibiotic resistance. This occurs when bacteria evolve and adapt to become resistant to the antibiotics used to treat them, making infections more difficult to treat and increasing the risk of complications.
  2. Reduced effectiveness of antibiotics: As resistant bacteria become more prevalent, common antibiotics may become less effective in treating infections, leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs.
  3. Disruption of the microbiome: Antibiotics can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the body, including beneficial bacteria in the gut. This disruption can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea or yeast infections, and may increase the risk of other health problems.
  4. Alternative treatments: For viral infections like the common cold, flu, or most sore throats, antibiotics are not effective and are not recommended. Instead of automatically reaching for antibiotics, consider the following alternative treatments:
  5. Symptomatic relief: Treat symptoms with over-the-counter medications, such as pain relievers, decongestants, or cough suppressants, to alleviate discomfort and promote recovery.
  6. Rest and hydration: Get plenty of rest and drink fluids to support the body's immune response and help alleviate symptoms.
  7. Prevention: Practice good hygiene habits, such as frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals to reduce the spread of viral infections. Once again, at your age, it is common to get bacterial infections when going through viral infection due to a weakened immune system. This explains why doctors prescribe antibiotics quite often. Please take medications as prescribed by finishing the course of antibiotics correctly.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
