I have IBS-C. Can I use Prucalopride for a long time?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 35 years old and have just been diagnosed with IBS-C following some tests, including a colonoscopy that proved negative. I have been prescribed Motegrity to help regulate my bowel movements. In a couple of days, I started experiencing more frequent bowel movements but occasionally get headaches and abdominal cramps.

  • Is it a common occurrence with Prucalopride?

  • Is this drug intended for temporary use until bowel movements stabilize?

I would like to know how long this treatment usually lasts in IBS-C patients like me.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Your symptom complex corresponds to Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), and the drug prescribed to you, Prucalopride, is usually recommended if dietary fiber and simple laxative treatment is ineffective.

Prucalopride is an agonist for certain receptors of serotonin located in the intestines. It activates motility of intestines and helps evacuation of stool from the colon. Mild headache and abdominal pain are one of the most frequent side effects of Prucalopride.

Nausea and diarrhea may occur within the first few days. This gets better when the body adapts to the medication, generally within one to two weeks. You should consult your doctor about reducing the dosage if symptoms persist.

In terms of duration, prucalopride can be taken for short- or long-term use. IBS-C is typically a functional disease that changes in severity over time. The drug may be taken for months by some patients to regulate bowel habits.

For those with ongoing problems, however, this treatment can be continued under a doctor’s supervision, since research has proven that it is safe to use on prolonged periods when used properly. Additionally, along with medication, some supportive steps should be taken into account.

Slow introduction of soluble fibers in your diet, drinking enough water, doing some physical exercise, and eating meals on schedule can enhance the movement of your bowels. Stress reduction will also help, as there is a link between the brain and the bowels in this case.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
