Can a vegetarian diet reduce my child’s constipation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am looking for a vegetarian diet plan for my four-year-old child who has been experiencing constipation for the past six months. Currently, my child only eats half a serving of fruits daily, as well as carrots and cucumbers, but does not consume milk or yogurt. Additionally, the current medication being taken is a daily laxative, and it is not providing relief.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

To relieve constipation in children, a vegetarian diet plan that includes high fiber foods, healthy fats, and plenty of fluids is recommended. Here are some dietary suggestions to consider:

  1. Incorporate whole-grain foods like brown rice, oatmeal, quinoa, and whole wheat bread into your child's diet. These foods are high in fiber, which can promote regular bowel movements.
  2. Offer a variety of high-fiber fruits such as prunes, pears, apples, berries, and oranges to your child. These can help to stimulate bowel movements.
  3. Add high-fiber vegetables like spinach, kale, broccoli, and sweet potato to your child's diet. These vegetables contain essential nutrients and fiber that promote healthy digestion.
  4. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day to soften stools and promote regular bowel movements.
  5. Incorporate healthy sources of fats into your child's diet like avocado, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. These fats can help to lubricate the intestines and promote bowel movements.
  6. Consider including protein sources like beans, lentils, tofu, and tempeh in your child's diet. These foods are high in fiber and can help to maintain healthy digestion.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.
