Why is my face itchy, dry, and darkened after skincare?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have an itchy, dry, and darkened face after using some skin care products, such as Niacinamide serum and some creams. What steps should I take?
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
The symptoms being experienced, such as itching, dryness, redness, and darkening of the facial skin after using skin care products such as Niacinamide serum, are most consistent with irritant contact dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis. This condition occurs when the skin barrier becomes irritated or reacts to certain ingredients present in cosmetic products. Using multiple new skin care products at the same time can disrupt the natural skin barrier and lead to inflammation.
This is a common condition frequently seen in the outpatient department, and it is usually manageable with appropriate care.
The most important step at present is to stop using all recently introduced skin care products, including serums, creams, and products containing active ingredients. The skin care routine should be kept very simple for the next one to two weeks to allow the skin barrier to recover.
For treatment, Cetirizine 10 milligrams may be taken once daily at night to help reduce itching and allergic inflammation.
To manage redness, itching, and the contact reaction on the face, Hydrocortisone 1% cream can be applied once daily at night for five to seven days only on the affected areas. It should not be used for a longer period than advised because facial skin is sensitive, and prolonged use of topical Corticosteroids may cause side effects. Along with this, using a gentle moisturizer several times daily can help repair the skin barrier. Moisturizers formulated for sensitive skin may be helpful.
For cleansing, a mild and fragrance-free cleanser should be used, and the face should be washed with lukewarm water only. Scrubs, exfoliants, toners, vitamin C products, retinoids, or acid-based skin care products should be avoided until the skin has completely healed.
The darkening of the skin is likely post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can occur after skin irritation or inflammation. This pigmentation usually improves gradually once the inflammation subsides and the skin barrier recovers.
If the symptoms persist, worsen, or spread despite these measures, consultation with a dermatologist is recommended for further evaluation and management.
