Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I recently had sexual intercourse, and my last menstrual period was earlier this month. Unfortunately, the contraceptive I was using failed. Could you please advise me on the possibility of pregnancy and any recommended next steps?
Thank you for your guidance.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Thank you for reaching out. The chance of pregnancy varies depending on when your last menstrual period occurred and how recently you interacted with a broken contraception. Ovulation normally happens in the middle of a regular cycle; having intercourse during this time may improve the chances of conception.
The contraceptive failed; there is a danger, however, pregnancy is not certain. If you are concerned, using an emergency contraception as soon as possible will help minimize the risk, ideally within 72 hours, though some choices work up to 5 days following intercourse.
It is also a good idea to track your next period. If it is more than a week late, consider getting a pregnancy test. You can also plan a follow-up session to receive individualized information and help on contraception alternatives to avoid future difficulties.
I hope this answers your questions.
We appreciate your comments and use them to make patient care better.
Thanks.
