Can using properly fitting footwear, maintaining good foot hygiene, and using antifungal medications help with corns?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 34 years old, with a height of 5.2 feet and weight of 132 pounds. I have been experiencing some round small bumps on the palm of my foot for several months. These round areas cause pain when I walk or apply pressure on them. Initially, a small watery pore or blister forms beneath the skin, and then the skin on this pore gradually becomes hard. It hurts when I press the area or while walking. Kindly provide me with a solution to this issue.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen your query and concern.

Based on your descriptions, it seems you may be experiencing a corn or callosity. Corns or callosities start as boggy and macerated areas. They are caused by pressure from unavoidable structures or abnormal mechanical stress, either from inside or outside your body.

Corns are often challenging to treat because they develop between the fourth and fifth digits due to bony prominences. To manage corns effectively, it is essential to use properly fitting footwear and maintain good foot hygiene to reduce the risk of infection. For treatment, 40% Salicylic acid pads and plaster should be used, followed by paring. Paring should be done by a dermatologist, or you can opt for debulking using a CO₂ laser.

Additionally, you can use antifungal creams like 2% Miconazole cream plus Fusidic acid cream for five days, twice daily, to prevent secondary infections. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take the medicines with their consent.

Review the situation if the problem persists, and provide a good clinical picture for further assessment.

Thanks and regards.
