Is corneal tattooing safe?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am worried about my daughter. She wants to change her eye color with something called corneal tattooing. I am not sure if it is real or a scam. But if it is real, is it safe? Can it really change her eye color forever? Should I support her decision? I am worried about her health. Messing with her eyes does not sound safe. If something goes wrong, it could cause problems later. My daughter is 17 and smart, but sometimes she has risky ideas without thinking. What is the deal with corneal tattooing? Should I support her or try to stop her?

Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Corneal tattooing, also known as oculofacial pigmentation, is a procedure where pigment is implanted into the cornea to change its color. However, it is essential to note that this procedure is not meant to change the actual eye color but rather to alter the appearance of the eye, giving the illusion of a different color. The procedure is typically used to improve the appearance of the eyes following injury or surgery. As for its safety and effectiveness, there are several concerns:

  1. Complications: Corneal tattooing carries risks, including infection, inflammation, and allergic reactions to the pigment. Additionally, the procedure may affect vision, as the pigment can scatter light, causing glare or halos around lights.
  2. Permanence: While the pigment is intended to be permanent, there is a possibility of the color fading over time or the need for additional touch-ups, which can further increase the risk of complications.
  3. Reversibility: There is no guaranteed method to reverse the procedure if your daughter changes her mind later.

Given these concerns, it is advisable to encourage your daughter to reconsider this decision. Instead, you could discuss alternative ways to express her individuality, such as fashion choices, hairstyles, or makeup. It is crucial to help her understand the potential risks and long-term consequences of corneal tattooing. As a parent, it is your responsibility to guide her in making informed decisions and prioritizing her health and well-being. Open communication and support can help her navigate these choices more thoughtfully.

Thank you for using icliniq, and have a nice day.
